Packing list for a weekend away with a baby: transportation

When planning a weekend getaway with a baby, it’s essential to carefully consider transportation. Whether you’re traveling by car, train, or plane, you always need to ensure your baby is transported safely and comfortably. Bring a car seat that is appropriate for your baby’s age and weight.

The most important items on the checklist to pack for a weekend away with a baby are a baby carrier and/or stroller. For short walks or hikes in nature, a baby carrier is ideal. It’s also convenient if you’re traveling light. If you’re traveling by car, also bring a stroller for walks at your destination.

What baby clothes to pack for a weekend away

What clothes do you need to pack for your baby for the weekend getaway? The answer depends on the season and the weather at your destination. But in general, it’s better to pack too many outfits than too few. Think of a few comfortable onesies, socks, pants, sweaters, and a warm jacket or sweater if it’s colder.

Make sure to pack some spare outfits in case something goes wrong. You might be surprised by how much clothing you end up bringing for a baby on such a trip, but clothes are a crucial category you shouldn’t forget!

Bringing food for your baby during your weekend away

One of the most important things you must not forget when going on a weekend getaway with a baby is food. Depending on your baby’s age, you may be breastfeeding or need to bring formula. If your baby already eats solids, be sure to bring enough meals and snacks. Think of jars of baby food or homemade purees that are easy to carry.

Make sure to bring enough formula, as well as a thermos with hot water to prepare bottles. We always brought our bottle warmer: we could plug it in anywhere. This way, we weren’t dependent on a restaurant with a (clean) microwave. It’s also useful to bring a cooler to store milk or other perishable food items.

Weekend getaway: what baby toys to pack

On a weekend away with your baby, you’ll want to keep your little one entertained, so it’s important to bring some toys. Bring some calm toys, like a teething ring, soft stuffed animals, and rattles suitable for their age. A colorful baby book or a music mobile can also provide entertainment while traveling or at your accommodation.

Keep in mind that not all accommodations offer the same amenities. One of my tips for a weekend getaway with a baby is to choose a place where your baby has space to play, such as a vacation home with a garden or a child-friendly hotel with spacious rooms.

Travel packing list for a good night’s sleep for your baby

As a parent, you want your baby to sleep well—especially during a weekend away. That’s why it’s smart not to forget the essentials that help your baby sleep soundly. Many accommodations offer a baby crib, so you don’t have to bring your own. But if your accommodation doesn’t have suitable sleeping options, then be sure to bring a travel cot yourself.

A sleeping bag or blanket is also a must. Basically, pack everything your baby needs to sleep well. If your baby is attached to their favorite cuddly toy, don’t forget it. Same with the baby monitor. Forgot the baby monitor? We’ve solved that a few times by leaving one of our phones in the baby’s room. Through a WhatsApp call, we could hear if he was awake or crying.

Packing list for a weekend away with a baby: baby care

What care products do you have to pack when going away for a weekend with your baby? Well, quite a few. Be sure to take extra diapers, baby wipes, a diaper bag with a changing mat, and a plastic bag for used diapers or dirty clothes. Muslin cloths, face wipes, and a small washcloth can also be useful while traveling.

Don’t forget the vitamin D & K drops. Also, it’s wise to bring multiple pacifiers in case one gets lost. A baby-friendly sunscreen is handy too if you’re going to a sunny destination.

What to pack for your baby for a weekend getaway with a pool

If your destination has a swimming pool and you plan to swim with your baby, bring a swim diaper. It’s also important to have a waterproof bathrobe or towel to keep your baby warm after swimming. Some babies love swimming, so it’s good to be prepared.

For babies, warm water is essential. Always choose a baby-friendly pool to ensure the water temperature is just right for little ones.

Extra tips for your first weekend getaway with your baby

The first weekend away with your baby can be exciting. So here are a few extra tips:

  • Choose a child-friendly accommodation. See if they offer a playpen, high chair, and other baby amenities. This makes your stay a lot easier—and you have to pack less.
  • Pick a location that isn’t too far away, so travel time with your young baby is short. A nearby weekend trip is often the most convenient and prevents your baby from becoming overtired. Our first trip was to Center Parcs—completely set up for little children, and only a 1.5-hour drive from our home.
  • Bring enough baby food a nd snacks for the road.
  • If your baby has a fixed sleep schedule, try to make the sleeping environment comfortable (a dark and quiet room is ideal).
  • Flexibility is key: try to balance your baby’s regular sleep and eating routine with testing how adaptable they are to a new environment and outings.
