Thinking about visiting Granada with kids? From exploring the world-famous Alhambra to getting lost in the narrow alleys of the Albaicín, there are plenty of exciting things to do in Granada. This blog is your guide for visiting Granada with children, covering the top sights, family-friendly spots, and practical tips for making the most of your time. If you’re planning a trip to Granada with your children, this is everything you need to know.
Sights in the historic center of Granada
The old, historic center of Granada has more than enough sights to wander around and explore for hours. With its charming streets and beautiful architecture, the old town of Granada is an ideal place to explore with kids. The mix of Spanish and Arabic influences makes the city unique, with impressive buildings that make you feel like you’re stepping into a different world each time.
One must-see attraction in the old town is the Granada Cathedral. This impressive structure is not only large but also filled with beautiful details. After visiting the cathedral, you can explore the Alcaicería, the local souks with their colorful stalls full of handmade products. It might be a bit touristy, but the atmosphere is always lively. Another unmissable sight for a glimpse into local history is the historic monument Doña de Oro.
The squares in the city center are always buzzing with life. Granada is a true student city, full of terraces where you can enjoy a drink. The most famous square, Plaza de la Rib Rambla, offers the perfect spot to relax and take in the city’s vibrant energy. And for a truly Spanish experience, there is no shortage of tapas bars where you can sample local delicacies.

Exploring the Albaicín neighborhood in Granada with children
The Albaicín district in Granada is another wonderful place to discover with children. This historic Arabic neighborhood, with its narrow streets and Moorish influences, feels like a labyrinth of picturesque alleys and cozy squares. Located higher up a hill, the Albaicín offers what are arguably the best views of the Alhambra in all of Granada. Because a gorge separates the Albaicín from the Alhambra, you can enjoy spectacular views of the complex from lookout points like the Mirador de San Nicolás or Mirador de San Cristóbal. These views are especially magical at sunset when the red stones of the Alhambra glow beautifully. Keep in mind, though, that these lookouts can get quite crowded at sunset. A quieter alternative is to watch the sunset from the gardens of the Mosque Mayor of Granada.
Aside from the views, there are several pleasant spots in the neighborhood to take a break. Plaza Larga is a lively square with a cheerful atmosphere. It’s perfect for having a drink while the children play. Plaza de los Tristes is another great place to relax, with its inviting vibe and several restaurants, making it a comfortable spot for families. The neighborhood also offers unique experiences such as traditional flamenco shows. Unfortunately, the Arabic baths (Hammams) are not suitable for children, but they do add a cultural touch for parents looking to unwind.

Top sights in Granada: Alhambra, Nasrid Palaces, and Generalife
A visit to the Alhambra is an unforgettable experience when you are in Granada. The complex includes several buildings, such as the stunning Nasrid Palaces, the Christian Palace, the Alcazaba fortress, and the beautifully landscaped Generalife gardens. This famous site in Granada is so extensive that you’ll need several hours to explore everything. Your visit begins with an Alhambra ticket, which includes a specific time slot for the Nasrid Palaces. Be aware: the time slot is only for the Nasrid Palaces, so make sure you’re already inside the Alhambra complex before your scheduled time.
You absolutely shouldn’t miss the Nasrid Palaces. These palaces are renowned for their magnificent Moorish architecture, with intricate details and elegant decorations. A highlight is the iconic courtyard with the Fountain of the Lions, where twelve lions spout water in a symmetrical garden. Another gem is the Hall of the Ambassadors, with its large reflecting pool and tranquil atmosphere. It’s one of the most beautiful rooms in the palace. Keep in mind that the palaces can get crowded, and strollers are not allowed. Bags must be stored in a locker, so be well-prepared if you’re visiting with small children or babies.

After visiting the Nasrid Palaces, you can explore the Alcazaba, a historic fortress offering impressive views over Granada. Although the fortress isn’t very large, it’s a great place for kids to wander and enjoy panoramic views of the city. Afterward, the Generalife gardens offer a serene escape from the crowds. The gardens are beautifully designed, with flowers, fountains, and walking paths inviting you to take your time and explore.

Visiting Carmen de los Mártires with children in Granada
Carmen de los Mártires is a beautiful place in Granada to visit with children. The photogenic building features impressive architectural details and is surrounded by a garden full of flowers, plants, trees, and a pond. Children will enjoy watching the freely roaming peacocks. It’s a peaceful spot where you can escape the city’s bustle. The pond and shady trees offer a pleasant setting for a short break, and the flowers add a cheerful atmosphere.

Going with kids to the Sierra Nevada near Granada
The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range near Granada and is a great destination in every season. In winter, the north side of the mountains becomes a popular ski resort. In summer, however, the southern side attracts more visitors, offering beautiful mountain landscapes and charming whitewashed villages. Capileira, Bubión, and Pampaneira are highly recommended for exploring, each with its own charm and authentic feel. Lanjaron, on the other hand, was a bit disappointing and less special than the other villages.
The southern area is also great for hiking, but be cautious in summer. It gets very hot and shady spots are limited. It’s best to start early in the day or choose shorter walks. Still, this mountain region near Granada offers fantastic views and natural beauty, perfect for an active outing with kids.
