What to pack for a weekend trip with a baby?
Packing list for a weekend away with a baby: transportation
When planning a weekend away with a baby, it’s important to think carefully about transportation. Whether you’re traveling by car, train, or plane, your baby should always be transported safely and comfortably. Make sure to bring a car seat that is suitable for your baby’s age and weight.
One thing that should definitely be on your packing list for a weekend away with a baby, is a baby carrier and/or stroller. A carrier is perfect for short distances or nature walks. It’s also very convenient if you’re traveling light. If you’re traveling by car, we recommend bringing a stroller as well for walks at your destination.

What clothes should you bring for a weekend away with a baby?
What kind of clothing should you pack for your baby for a weekend trip? Of course, that depends on the season and the weather at your destination. But in general, it’s better to bring too many outfits than too few. Think of a few comfortable bodysuits, socks, pants, sweaters, and a warmer jacket or sweater and a hat if the weather is colder.
Make sure to bring a few extra outfits in case something happens. You might be surprised by how much clothing you end up packing for such a small person, but clothes are definitely a category you don’t want to underestimate!
What to bring for food and drinks during a weekend away with a baby?
One of the most important things you shouldn’t forget when traveling with a baby is food. Depending on your baby’s age, you may be breastfeeding or using formula. If your baby has already started solid foods, make sure to bring enough snacks and meals. Baby food jars or homemade purees that are easy to transport work very well.
Make sure to pack enough formula or expressed breast milk, as well as a thermos with hot water to prepare bottles. We always brought our own bottle warmer, which we could simply plug into a power outlet. That way we weren’t dependent on a restaurant having a (clean) microwave. It’s also helpful to bring a small cooler for storing milk or other foods that need to stay cold.
What toys should you bring?
During a weekend away, you’ll want your baby to stay entertained, so bringing a few toys is a good idea. Choose calm, simple toys such as a teething ring, soft stuffed animals, and rattles that are suitable for their age. A baby book with bright colors or a musical mobile can also be great for entertainment during the journey or in your accommodation.
Keep in mind that not all accommodations offer the same facilities. One of our tips for traveling with a baby is to choose a place where your baby has some space to play, such as a holiday home with a garden or a child-friendly hotel with spacious rooms.

Sleep essentials you shouldn’t forget
As a parent, you want your baby to sleep well, especially during a weekend trip. That’s why it’s important not to forget the essentials that help your baby sleep comfortably. Many accommodations offer a baby cot. In that case, you won’t need to bring your own crib or sheets. If your accommodation doesn’t provide suitable sleeping options, don’t forget to bring a travel cot.
A sleeping bag or blanket is also a must. Basically, pack whatever your child normally needs to sleep well. Does your baby have a favorite stuffed animal? Make sure you bring it.
And don’t forget the baby monitor. If you do forget it, there’s still a simple solution. We’ve solved this more than once by leaving one of our phones in the baby’s room. Through a WhatsApp call, we could easily hear if he woke up or started crying.
Everything for your baby’s daily care
What kind of care products should you bring for a weekend trip with a baby? Quite a few, actually. Make sure to pack extra diapers, baby wipes, a diaper bag with a changing mat, and a plastic bag for used diapers or dirty clothes. Muslin cloths, burp cloths, and a small washcloth can also be very useful while traveling.
Don’t forget vitamin D and K drops either. It’s also smart to bring multiple pacifiers in case one gets lost. And if you’re traveling somewhere sunny, a baby-friendly sunscreen is definitely worth packing.
Swimming with a baby: what do you need?
If your destination has a swimming pool and you’re thinking about going for a swim with your baby, make sure to bring a swim diaper. It’s also useful to pack a waterproof bathrobe or towel so your baby stays warm after swimming. Many babies love being in the water, so it’s nice to be prepared.
For babies, it’s important that the water is warm enough. Try to choose a pool that is specifically suitable for babies, so you can be sure the water temperature is comfortable for them.

Extra tips for your first weekend trip with a baby
Your first weekend trip with a baby can feel quite exciting. Based on our own experience, here are a few extra tips:
- Choose a child-friendly accommodation. Check whether they offer things like a playpen, high chair, or other baby facilities. It makes your stay much easier, and you’ll have to pack less.
- Pick a destination that isn’t too far away. Long travel times with a young baby can be tiring. A nearby destination is often the easiest option and helps prevent your little one from becoming overtired. Our first weekend away was at Center Parcs in Belgium. The accommodation was completely geared toward families with small children, and only a 1.5-hour drive from our home.
- Bring enough baby food (breast milk or formula) and some extra snacks for the journey.
- If your baby follows a regular sleep schedule, try to recreate a comfortable sleep environment. A dark and quiet room works best.
- Flexibility is key. During your trip, try to find a balance between sticking to your baby’s usual sleep and feeding schedule and seeing how flexible your baby is in a new environment and during outings.

FAQ – What to pack for a weekend trip with a baby
From what age can you go on a weekend trip with a baby?
In principle, you can go on a weekend trip with a baby from the first few weeks, as long as you make sure there is enough rest, proper feeding, and a safe place for your baby to sleep. Many parents feel more comfortable planning their first short trip when their baby is around 2 to 3 months old. That’s exactly what we did as well: our first weekend trip with a baby was when our little one was about 2 months old.
What should you keep in mind during a weekend away with a baby?
When planning a weekend away with a baby, there are a few important things to consider:
– A safe sleeping place for your baby
– Enough food and diapers

What is a good destination for a weekend trip with a baby?
Good destinations for a weekend away with a baby are places that offer peace, space, and baby-friendly facilities. Think of holiday parks, family-friendly hotels, or holiday homes in nature. How many clothes should you bring for a weekend away with a baby?
For a weekend trip with a baby, it’s a good idea to pack at least two outfits per day. Babies can get messy quickly: spilled milk, drool, or diaper accidents happen more often than you’d expect. We usually pack extra bodysuits, pants, socks, and a warm sweater or jacket, just to be safe.
How many diapers should you bring for a weekend away with a baby?
On average, a baby uses 6 to 8 diapers per day. For a weekend away with a baby, we recommend bringing around 20 to 25 diapers. It’s always smart to pack a few extra diapers for the journey or unexpected situations.
