Villages in the Ardèche to visit
Vogüé and its highlights
Vogüé is one of the most beautiful villages in the Ardèche and a great place to visit with children. It sits beautifully along the Ardèche River, surrounded by dramatic rock cliffs. The village has narrow streets and alleyways that take you right into its medieval past. Stone houses and cobbled lanes create a charming atmosphere typical of the picturesque villages in the Ardèche.
The Château de Vogüé is the village’s main landmark. This medieval castle stands high above the village and offers stunning views over the river and surrounding nature. It can be visited and is fun to explore with kids, with its large halls and impressive courtyard. The castle gardens sit even higher and provide a wide, clear view of the area.

The postcard village of Labeaume
Labeaume is another beautiful, picture-perfect village. This medieval settlement lies at the foot of rocky cliffs and feels like a maze of narrow streets and stone houses. The La Beaume river runs straight through it.
One of the highlights here is the Château de Labeaume. This mostly ruined castle offers views over the valley and river. For children, it’s mainly a place where they can wander freely and explore the surroundings, while you enjoy the views and the sense of history.

Enjoying the views in Balazuc
One of the villages in the Ardèche you really shouldn’t miss is Balazuc. This stunning village sits slightly elevated and offers beautiful views over the river winding along the cliffs. It’s one of the most beautiful villages in the Ardèche, with narrow streets and old stone houses that are easy to explore with children.
The best viewpoint is from the old tower near the church. From there, you look out over the river and the surrounding landscape. This makes Balazuc one of the most photogenic villages in the Ardèche, but also one of the most manageable and family-friendly.

The lively Vallon-Pont-d’Arc
Vallon-Pont-d’Arc is a lively but touristy destination in the Ardèche. In the village itself you’ll find markets and small shops selling regional products like cheese, wine, honey, and olive oil. Beyond that, Vallon-Pont-d’Arc doesn’t have many major sights, especially compared to other villages in the Ardèche.
The real highlight is the surrounding area. The village is the perfect base for visiting the Gorges de l’Ardèche, one of the most impressive natural areas in France. From here, you can also enjoy outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and hiking.

Visiting Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche
Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche is a quiet village by the river, but it lacks some of the charm of the other villages. The village itself doesn’t have many sights, but its riverside location is beautiful. The small beaches along the river are perfect for relaxing and enjoying the view.
Here, everything comes together along the water’s edge. The old bridge over the Ardèche is worth a photo stop, and the view across to Aiguèze on the other side is stunning. The surrounding area also offers plenty of opportunities for walking and cycling.

Aiguèze with kids
Aiguèze is a historic village perched on the cliffs, directly across the river from Saint-Martin-d’Ardèche. It is listed as one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France and is known for its charming streets, impressive castle remains, and breathtaking views. Aiguèze has kept its medieval character beautifully, and wandering through its narrow lanes feels like stepping back in time.
The village is car-free, which makes it especially easy to explore with children. We were able to let our 1.5-year-old wander around safely here. The view from the ramparts is fantastic: you look out over the river and surrounding nature. There are also a few good restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy local dishes.

The peaceful Naves
Naves is one of the most authentic and picturesque villages in the Ardèche, still feeling quiet and local. It’s a refreshing contrast to some of the more touristy spots.
The narrow streets and historic buildings make it fun to explore together. The Église Saint-Pierre is one of the village’s main sights. The old farmhouses and village homes also give a great impression of traditional life in the Ardèche, which makes it interesting for children to see as well.
