Our Experiences with the Miffy Museum
What to do at the Miffy Museum in Utrecht
The Miffy Museum is not your typical museum where children are only allowed to look around quietly. Instead, it is an interactive children’s museum where toddlers and preschoolers can discover, learn, and experience things through play. Learning through play is at the heart of the experience, encouraging children to explore, experiment, and actively join in.
The museum is divided into several themed rooms inspired by the world of Miffy. Each space has its own story and includes analogue, mechanical, and sensory play elements designed especially for young children. These are the main areas inside the museum:
- Miffy’s House: Children can cook in the kitchen, sleep in Miffy’s bed, or water plants in the garden. Familiar, interactive, and easy for little ones to relate to.
- Poppy Pig’s Clothing Store: Kids can play shopkeeper by choosing clothes, trying them on, and checking out at the register. Perfect for imaginative play.
- Farmer John’s Farm: Explore the farmyard with a playful dice game, sweep the yard, stack hay bales, and meet farm animals. A fun introduction to life on the farm.
- The Traffic Square: Drive small cars, ride bikes, operate barriers, or control a train. A playful way for children to learn about traffic and transportation.
- Creative Studio: On the ground floor, children can draw, craft, and get creative in a relaxed and welcoming space.
Besides the permanent themed rooms, the museum regularly organizes extra activities such as creative workshops, storytime sessions, and low-stimulation mornings for children who benefit from a calmer environment. There are also special programs for schools and daycare centers.

What is the best age for visiting the Miffy Museum?
The Miffy Museum is especially suited for toddlers and preschoolers between 2 and 6 years old. We visited when Luca was 2 years old. He absolutely loved it and was fascinated by everything around him, although some activities were still a little too advanced for him. For him, it was mainly about exploring, touching, wandering around, and playing freely.
For children around 4 years old, the museum feels ideal. They understand the different activities better, can fully join in with the role-play experiences, and really use their imagination throughout the themed spaces. At the same time, it never feels too childish.

Tickets for the Miffy Museum: What you need to know
If you are planning to visit the Miffy Museum, it is important to book ahead. Tickets must be purchased and reserved online through the museum’s website. You cannot buy tickets at the entrance, even last minute.
When booking, you choose both a date and a time slot. This also applies if you have a Museum Card. The card is valid, but you still need to reserve your spot in advance.
During weekends and school holidays, tickets can sell out quickly, so booking early is definitely recommended. One thing we appreciated: if your plans change unexpectedly, you can reschedule your tickets to another day free of charge.

Practical tips for visiting the Miffy Museum
A visit to this interactive museum is very manageable with young children. Here are a few useful tips before you go:
- Cloakroom & Strollers: There is a free cloakroom with lockers for coats and belongings. Strollers and buggies are usually not allowed inside the museum, but there is a dedicated parking area for them. This helps keep the themed rooms safe and organized. Exceptions are sometimes made for very young babies, so feel free to ask upon arrival.
- Museum Shop: Across from the museum, you will find a lovely shop filled with Miffy merchandise. Great if you want to bring home a small souvenir or gift.
- Food & Drinks: Eating and drinking inside the museum itself is not allowed, but there is a cozy museum café where you can take a break. They serve sandwiches, pancakes, and other simple meals, and almost everything is vegetarian. Very convenient when visiting with small children.
- Parking & Accessibility: We parked at the Vaartsche Rijn parking garage, which is about a 10-minute walk from the museum. Easy to do with a toddler in a stroller or walking alongside you. Public transport is also a convenient option, and you can use one of Utrecht’s P+R locations if you prefer combining parking with public transport.

Our experiences with the Miffy Museum
The Miffy Museum is a wonderful place where children can play, discover, and learn without it ever feeling educational in a forced way. What stood out most to us was the balance between fun and learning. Everything feels safe, inviting, and perfectly designed for young children.
The activities are varied, and the museum does a great job catering to different ages between 2 and 6 years old. Our favorite part was seeing the familiar scenes from the Miffy books brought to life in the themed rooms. It felt very recognizable for the children and pleasantly nostalgic for us as parents too.
Even with the reserved time slots, we still found the museum quite busy. If your child is sensitive to noise or easily overwhelmed, this is something worth keeping in mind. In that case, one of the low-stimulation mornings could be a great alternative.
Overall, you will probably spend around 1.5 to 2 hours at the museum, which felt like the perfect amount of time for young children without becoming too overwhelming.
